At Youngstown State University, hands-on learning encourages students to move beyond theory and apply knowledge in real-world environments. Through research, student organizations and internship opportunities, Penguins gain experience that prepares them for professional success. For computer science major Henry Paschke, a Sokolov Honors College student graduating in spring 2027, that learning model shaped the path to his internship as an AI automation intern at Rockwell Automation in Mayfield Heights. There, he contributed to software development projects and strengthened both his technical and collaborative skills. Paschke entered the internship with a strong foundation thanks to undergraduate research with Alina Lazar, professor in Computer Science and Information Systems. Along with another YSU student, he spent time at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California working on artificial intelligence applications — an experience that helped guide his academic direction and became a key talking point in his internship interviews.
Youngstown State University will hold three Commencement ceremonies Friday, Dec. 12, and Saturday, Dec. 13, in the Beeghly Physical Education Center. Alumni speakers Tim Petrey, Sean Jones and Judge Carla J. Baldwin will deliver keynote addresses alongside student speakers Ashley Perry, Cole Burnett and Nathan Johnson.
Youngstown State University’s Sokolov Honors College hosted its second annual Pre-Health Research Symposium, bringing together undergraduate researchers from across campus to present original work in biology, chemistry, health sciences and related disciplines. Students showcased their findings through oral and poster presentations aimed at strengthening their research experience and preparing for future careers in healthcare.
The symposium welcomed students, faculty, staff and family members who gathered to support presenters and celebrate their scholarly achievements.
Given the event’s growth from its inaugural year, the planning team expanded the awards structure to recognize a broader range of student excellence. Award recipients are listed below:
