Youngstown State University’s Dominic A. and Helen M. Bitonte College of Health and Human Services honored alumni during its 15th Annual Alumni Recognition Dinner Friday, Oct. 4.
There were 10 honorees, including alumni receiving the College Appreciation Award and the Dean’s Appreciation Award.
The Warren P. Williamson, Jr. College of Business Administration presented the 2024 Outstanding Alumni Awards, Friday, October 4, in Williamson Hall.
The recipients of the awards were Ryan Day, Bill Vennetti, Heather Chunn, and Nicole DeCenso.
Ryan Lamb, a second-year student in Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music, has won the gold medal at the highly competitive Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival. The event, renowned for attracting the finest brass musicians from around the globe, took place August 9-12 at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan.
YSU’s Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe teams both competed at the 2024 Eastern Great Lakes Student Symposium, hosted by Akron University on April 4-6th.
Both teams have been researching, designing, building, and preparing for the competition since September and will be representing YSU at the national level this summer.
The Youngstown State University Ethics Bowl Team secured first place at the 2024 Central States Regional Ethics Bowl, held at Marion University in Indianapolis, Indianna. This victory marks the team’s seventh regional title in its 10-year history of competing in the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl.
As the 14th day passes for the spring 2024 semester, the College of Graduate Studies has reported an all-time high enrollment of 2,529 students.

Youngstown State University alumni chapters across the nation actively participated in National Volunteer Week, held April 20 – 27. Dedicated to giving back to their communities, YSU alumni and friends from various regions volunteered and showcased their penguin pride through various service projects that made a positive impact.
Youngstown State University’s Spring 2024 commencement was separated into six ceremonies, one for each college, on May 4 and 5. Each ceremony featured a ceremony and student speaker.
Youngstown State University’s Office of Alumni Engagement has awarded five students with the YSU Alumni Legacy Scholarship for the 2024 – 2025 school year.
The YSU Alumni Legacy Scholarship awards $1,000 to each recipient in recognition of their academic achievements.
This year we had 15 Penguin couples share their love story with us, and each one is special! Congratulations to all the alumni who started their journey together at YSU.
Thanks in part to our volunteer writers last year, 263 new Penguins are now enrolled at YSU! Volunteers wrote out over 1,300 postcards in the 2023-2024 campaign to prospective students to encourage them to choose YSU to continue their education.
Members of the class of 1974 were inducted into the Half Century Club during Homecoming weekend. President Bill Johnson and First Lady LeeAnn Johnson welcomed into their home new Half Century Club members and those who previously reached this milestone.
On September 19th, 2024, Bill Johnson was officially welcomed as YSU’s 10th President during a memorable ceremony in the Chestnut Room at Kilcawley Center.
YSU is experiencing a significant surge in enrollment for Fall 2024, defying national trends. YSU has achieved a notable 10.7% increase from last year’s enrollment of 10,993, the largest enrollment since 2018.

Recipients of 2024 WCBA Outstanding Alumni Awards include Ryan Day, chief financial officer of Hynes Industries; Bill Vennetti, partner of Packer Thomas; Heather Chunn, vice president of operations and human resources for the Youngstown State University Foundation and Nicole DeCenso, finance expert in loan accounting with PNC Bank.
Fourteen YSU University Theatre students will be making their international debut this summer. Performing as the Steel Penguin Ensemble, they will be a part of the Off-Broadway musical “Here There Be Dragons” at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The students will travel to Scotland in August with Lecturer Adam Day Howard.
