YSU art students creating murals to transform City Centre One elevators through collaborative mural project

Youngstown State University’s Department of Art is partnering with the Western Reserve Port Authority of City Centre One and the Economic Action Group to create a series of innovative interior murals that will transform the building’s elevator spaces into immersive artistic experiences.

Led by Professor Dragana Crnjak, YSU’s site-specific mural class is reimagining transitional spaces through bold, thought-provoking designs that will engage visitors throughout City Centre One. The collaborative project brings together professional vision and student creativity to elevate the visual and conceptual experience of everyday spaces.

“This project goes beyond creating visually compelling artwork,” said Professor Crnjak. “Our primary objective is professional development. Students are gaining essential competencies in planning, organizing, and executing large-scale art projects through structured phases of collaborative ideation, design, material preparation, and execution.”

The project provides students with real-world experience working with community partners and professional stakeholders, preparing them for careers in public art and design. Through this immersive learning process, students develop the technical skills and professional practices necessary for success in the contemporary art world.
