Youngstown State University has a rich tradition of family attendance and graduation. The legacy of a child following in the footsteps of a parent/guardian toward attaining a degree from the same alma mater is indeed a cherished tradition. The YSU Office of Alumni Engagement is committed to fostering relationships between graduates and YSU and is proud to offer five $1000 Legacy Scholarships to children of YSU alumni.

  • Five $1000 academic scholarships are available to be awarded to children of graduates of Youngstown State University and be utilized toward their tuition, course or lab fees, parking, library and/or computer fees. Fines are ineligible to be paid from this scholarship and direct payment will not be made to students.
  • The students currently attending YSU must have a GPA of at least 3.0.
  • These scholarships are not automatically renewable. However, the student may reapply from year to year.
  • Students must meet the scholarship criteria and attend YSU full time each semester.
  • An essay (500 words or less) on why this type of scholarship is important and why the applicant will benefit from it will be required with the application. Applications without the essay will be disqualified.
  • The scholarship must be used within one year of awarding, beginning fall semester.

2025 Alumni Legacy Scholarship Recipients

Youngstown State University’s Office of Alumni Engagement has awarded five students with the YSU Alumni Legacy Scholarship for the 2025 – 2026 school year.

The YSU Alumni Legacy Scholarship awards $1,000 to each recipient in recognition of their academic achievements and their decision to follow in the footsteps of YSU alumni parents. The Scholarship committee is comprised of three YSU alumni who volunteer to read the scholarship essays and select the award recipients.

This year’s awardees are: 

Cameron Carr, son of Amy Shane ‘02

Cameron Carr is a Finance major studying financial management. Cameron is actively involved in his fraternity Sigma Tau Gamma. He plans to attend law school when he graduates from YSU.

Livia Laudermilt, daughter of Angel Laudermilt '94,'96

Livia Laudermilt, studying Integrated Language Arts Education. Livia is very involved on campus and is a part of the Sokolov Honors College, and works as a Teaching Assistant, Student Assistant. She is Secretary of the YSU Honors Trustees and is a participant in the Dr. Abdu’s Pen Pal Program as a Community Fellow.

Jackson Linko, son of Jonathan Linko ’99 and Malynda Linko ’00

Jackson Linko is pursuing a degree in Primary Education, with a Primary Intervention Specialist major and plans to graduate in 2027. Jackson is an active member of the YSU Forensic Science Club and YSUnity. In his spare time, he works for a youth fitness company called Gymsters.

Jack Phillips, son of Liz Phillips ’91 and David Phillips ‘91

Jack Philips is a current Business student majoring in Human Resources and minoring in Criminal Justice. Jack is a part of the Sokolov Honors College and is a member of the Economics Club and Society for Human Resources at YSU.

Scott Tanner, son of Tim Tanner ’92 and Valerie Tanner ’95

Scott Tanner is a current Sports Broadcasting major with a minor in Marketing. Scott is involved in his fraternity, Sigma Tau Gamma as the Vice President of Recruitment. He is also a two-time Deans List Honoree.
