Youngstown State University first in Ohio to earn Foundry Educational Foundation certification

Youngstown State University has been awarded a three-year certification by the Foundry Educational Foundation, becoming the first in Ohio and one of only 6 nationwide selected for the 2025-2026 cycle.

The FEF certification recognizes colleges and universities that meet the foundation’s rigorous standards for excellence in metalcasting and foundry education. Certified programs demonstrate strong industry partnerships, modern facilities and student success in areas such as research, competitions and workforce placement. This certification will allow YSU to expand upon its educational offerings in advanced manufacturing and metalcasting disciplines.

“This certification sets YSU apart as a leader in foundry education and advanced manufacturing,” said Brian Vuksanovich, professor in the School of Computer Science, Information and Engineering Technology and YSU’s FEF key professor. “Our program has consistently received requests from employers seeking graduates with foundry experience. This recognition helps strengthen our connection to industry and supports our students with scholarships, internships and professional opportunities.”

YSU’s mechanical engineering technology program has established a strong regional and national presence in metalcasting, particularly through its state-of-the-art robotic foundry housed in the Excellence Training Center. The facility was designed and built by YSU faculty, staff and students in collaboration with regional industry partners and uses the same automation and casting technologies applied in the field.

The university’s American Foundry Society student chapter also played a key role in earning the certification. The chapter has demonstrated excellence through job placement, community engagement and consistent top finishes in national competitions. In 2025, YSU’s team earned “Best in Show” and “Best Performance” at the Steel Founders’ Cast in Steel Competition, showcasing the hands-on skill and creativity of YSU students.

Vuksanovich noted that the certification reflects years of collaboration efforts from faculty in various departments, students and industry partners. “This has been a long-term investment by a lot of people who believe in what we are building here,” he said. “It’s not just about recognition – it’s about preparing our students for high-demand, high-skill careers in an industry that truly needs them.”

The FEF certification provides students access to exclusive scholarship funding, industry networking events and employment pipelines in the growing metal-manufacturing sector.
